Obituary

Rose Edna (Jarboe) Maruyama was born on December 12, 1926 to Guy and Catherine Jarboe in Grayville, Illinois. From an early age she was involved in the family business as a "sampler, buyer and seller of penny candy" at Jarboe's Café. She also grew up in The Old House, another famous Grayville landmark owned and operated by her parents. She was the middle sister between Becky (Groff) and Maynette (Alcorn).

Rose always wanted to be a teacher and she earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Eastern Illinois University in 1948 and then taught high school in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Colorado. During her 16 years of teaching at Gateway HS in Aurora, CO, she was the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) adviser and proudly supported all Gateway students who participated and won awards at all competitions from district to state to national.

In 1953 Rose decided to drive to Chicago, IL to study Christian education at the McCormick Theological Seminary. There she met her husband, Allen Maruyama, and they were married on May 10, 1954. She became an active pastor's wife and choir member at the churches which he served in Wisconsin, Iowa and Colorado. While in Wisconsin, her children, Sarah and John were born.

Rose enjoyed traveling and two memorable experiences during the 1980's were the Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church choir's Europe tour in which they sang in many famous churches and later Rose and Allen's sabbatical where they lived in Japan for six months.

One thing most people remember about Rose was her passion for current events. She was strong, compassionate, confident. She was a member of the League of Women Voters in Denver for many years. She loved learning and participated in the the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Denver which is "an adult learning membership program designed for men and women age 50 and "better" who wish to pursue lifelong learning." Rose most recently lived at St. Andrews Retirement Village in Aurora, CO.

She is survived by her husband, Allen and her children, Sarah (Mike) Brady and John Maruyama, and also by her grandchildren, who she was so proud of, Amanda Biles and Jonathan Maruyama. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Rebecca (Herschel) Groff and Maynette (Ralph) Alcorn. She is survived by her nephews, Jim (Andi) Groff and Tim (Becki) Alcorn of Illinois and many other extended family.

A celebration of her life will be scheduled for January 6, 2018 at 10 AM at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO 80220. Memorials may be made to the church or to Gateway High School in Aurora, CO.
