Maruyama
November 6, 1926 – October 18, 2022
Reverend Dr. Allen Maruyama passed away on October 18, 2022, in Aurora, Colorado - less than a month short of his 96 th birthday.
Allen was born in Las Animas, CO to immigrant parents from Japan on November 6, 1926, the fourth of five children. He enlisted in the Army in 1945 and served honorably. He graduated from the University of Colorado and then attended McCormick Theological Seminary where he earned a Master's of Divinity and a Master's of Christian Education. He later received his Ph.D from Aquinas School of Theology.
Allen married Rose Jarboe in 1954 and they had two children - Sarah and John while in Prairie du Sac, WI. Allen served churches in Wisconsin, then ten years at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, IA as Associate Pastor. In 1972, Allen and family moved to Denver, CO where he became a co-pastor at Montview Blvd. Presbyterian Church and retired from there in 1992. Allen ran for Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly twice – in 1980 and 1990. Allen had a strong passion for human rights and embraced a progressive ideology which enabled him to remain current and relevant in our changing world.
Allen then studied massage therapy at the Massage Therapy Institute of Colorado and he also became a Reiki (energy healing) Master – he practiced and shared this therapy with many, believing that it was a continuation of his work of ministering and healing.
Allen enjoyed attending Broncos games, watching the Rockies, golfing, bowling, fishing and spending time at the family mountain condo. He and Rose enjoyed a 6 month sabbatical in Japan in 1986. He also traveled to Israel, Thailand, Nepal, India. He loved his family and friends – his greatest happiness in life was to have the fellowship, security and love of his family.
Allen was pre-deceased by his wife, Rose and is survived by his children, Sarah (Mike) Brady and John Maruyama and grandchildren, Amanda Biles and Jonathan Maruyama.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 10AM at WheatRidge Presbyterian Church, 9180 W 38th Ave, WheatRidge, CO 80033 with a later internment at the Montview Blvd Presbyterian Columbarium.
