Arthur G.
Staliwe
July 24, 1946 – September 6, 2023
Arthur G. Staliwe passed away September 6, 2023 due to complications from pneumonia. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Anne Grasee.
Art and Anne met through a mutual friend that recognized their remarkable similarities yet very different personalities. Anne brought balance and joy to Art's life. He would take her on his adventures and she would broaden his horizons with culture, travel, and an active social life with friends. He loved her dearly and was a better more complete person because of her. Her loss to him was devastating.
Art was born in New York City to his parents Willie and Lina. After high school Art enlisted in the Army and served in Alaska in support of the cold weather forces at Fort Greeley. During his time in Alaska, he developed a passion for all things outdoors. When his Army duty finished, he enrolled at Syracuse University where he studied journalism. Upon graduation he made his way to Colorado where he built his life based on his passions.
He studied law at Denver University and after graduation he established a career with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission as an Administrative Judge. The law appealed to Art's insatiable thirst for knowledge. He was a voracious reader and thoroughly enjoyed studying every aspect of topics that piqued his interest. As much as he enjoyed the law, it truly was a means to facilitate his true passion for the outdoors.
Shortly after arriving in Colorado, Art qualified to teach ski instruction at the Arapaho Basin ski area. After a few years he transferred to the Loveland ski area where he taught for over 30 years. He rarely missed a weekend on the slopes. It was his tonic. He loved sharing his passion with family, friends, and the countless students that he encountered.
When Art was not skiing, he was rafting, hiking, spending endless hours on the firing range, or any of the other countless activities the mountain west has to offer. His position with the PUC facilitated the opportunity for him to see every corner of Colorado and the adjoining states. When he was not working, he was planning his next excursion to one of the many national parks in the mountain west and taking almost anyone with whom he could share the adventure.
Art would share his passion with his friends and family as well as acquaintances without hesitation. He was generous with his time, knowledge, and resources. His reward was the opportunity to see the wonder in his companion's eyes when they first experienced the south rim of the a Grand Canyon or the majesty of the Grand Tetons. The mountain west was his chapel. Art was filled with the wonderment of God's creations that brought grace and peace to his soul.
He is survived by family and friends who loved him dearly and will miss the kindness and caring he showed all he knew. Art was preceded in death by his wife Anne, his parents Willie and Lina, his brothers Bill and George, and his nephew Mathew.
A committal service will be held for Art and Anne Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 11:00am at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver, CO 80235 staging area C with a reception to follow at the Courtyard Denver Southwest/Lakewood, 7180 West Hampden Ave., Lakewood CO 80227.
