Obituary

Augustine Barón, Jr., 72, passed away March 2, 2023, in Denver, Colorado. Those who knew him remember him as a beloved son, brother, uncle, granduncle, friend, colleague, professor, mentor and cat dad.

He was born in El Paso, Texas, the third of four children to Augustine and Christine Barón. He was a graduate of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School and Jesuit High School, received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Loyola University New Orleans and his Doctor of Psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Augustine lived in Austin, Texas for 45 years and worked at the University of Texas at Austin Counseling and Mental Health Center for 27 years before retiring. During his career there, he was a therapist to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, Training Director for dozens of clinical and counseling psychology interns, and Associate Director of the center. Shortly after his retirement Augustine decided to take up online teaching and mentoring and was part of the faculty at Walden University and Capella University before fully retiring in 2013. In fall 2022, he moved to Denver to live with his sisters, Mary Louise and Anna Barón, in a new home they purchased together.

Lover of classical music. Razor sharp wit. Benefactor to special students, both family and friend. Budding Buddhist. Avid traveler, foodie, Austinite. Collector of Alebrijes, Catrinas and Sugar Skulls. Creator of fused glass treasures. Student of the Russian language. Inspector Gamache fan. The very model of a modern Major-General. These are but a few of his diverse personas.

Augustine was taken from his dear family too soon. He is survived by his sisters, niece Lisa Brown, nephew-in-law Niels Brown, grandnieces Natalie and Georgia Brown, sister-in-law Edna Barón, several cousins in the El Paso-Juarez metro area, and his sweet and fluffy tortie cat Endora. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Richard Barón and two beloved cats Sassy and Esther.

A private service will be held. Donations in his honor may be made to Austin Classical Guitar , the ACLU , and the Cat Care Society .
