Obituary

Barbara Reed Houlik, 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2025, just shy of her 97th birthday.

Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Barbara was the daughter of Clarence Edward Reed and Bess Lorena (Thompson) Reed. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1946 and attended the University of Wichita (now WSU), where she met Anton "Hap" Houlik. They married in 1948 and together, raised five wonderful children.

In 1982, Barbara relocated to Denver, Colorado, to be closer to family and began a long and meaningful career with the National Conference of State Legislatures, where she dedicated over 30 years of committed service to child welfare and educational programs.

To many, Barbara was known simply and lovingly as Mom, Momma-Luba, Nanny, Grandma Barbara, Granny, or Great-Nanny. She was a woman of deep faith and a longtime member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church, where she served faithfully on the Altar Guild and flower ministries.

Barbara lived a vibrant and active life, working until the age of 87. She was an avid traveler who delighted in exploring with friends, family, and often on her own. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards, walking, and collecting miniature spoons.

Above all, Barbara will be remembered for her selflessness, generosity, and unwavering love. Her wisdom, strength, and grace leave a lasting legacy in the lives of all who knew her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Bess Reed; her siblings Peggy Foster, Dorcas Cochran, Maryann Papke, Charles Reed, Nancy McBride, and John Reed; and her grandson, Nicholas R. Peterson. She is survived by her children: Steven (Susan) Houlik, The Reverend Michael (Barbara) Houlik, Anne (Michael) Cosby, Jeffrey Houlik, and James (Patricia) Houlik; as well as 11 cherished grandchildren and 18 beautiful great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life and cremains burial will take place on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church 6190 East Quincy Avenue, Cherry Hills Village, CO 80111.
