Brian R.
Vogt
June 10, 1958 – March 25, 2025
Brian R. Vogt, a man whose life was marked by extraordinary public service and leadership, sadly passed away on March 25, 2025, after a spirited battle with esophageal cancer. Born in Aurora, Colorado on June 10, 1958, Brian was the cherished son of Arapahoe County Sheriff Roy Vogt and Arapahoe County Treasurer Dorothy Vogt. From an early age, Brian demonstrated qualities of leadership and dedication that would define his remarkable life.
Brian attended Heritage High School in Littleton, Colorado where he was elected class President every year, highlighting his innate ability to lead and inspire his peers. His commitment to excellence extended beyond high school as he pursued higher education at the University of Colorado in Boulder. In 1981, he graduated with a degree in Classical Antiquities, which reflected his deep appreciation for history and culture. During his time at the University, Brian spent a transformative year abroad in Lancaster, England, broadening his horizons and fostering international friendships.
Brian's professional life was characterized by his dedication to public service. He began his career in Washington D.C. with the administration of President Ronald Reagan, where he gained valuable insights into national governance and policy making. He then returned to Colorado, where he dedicated 18 years to the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, including 14 years as President. Brian's visionary leadership during this period was instrumental in fostering economic growth and community development in the region.
One of Brian's most notable accomplishments was his role as a founding father of the City of Centennial. In 2000, he led a volunteer group of business and community leaders called Arapahoe County Citizens for Self Determination in a successful two-year process of incorporation. This effort culminated in the creation of the largest city by population at the time of founding in the history of the United States. Brian's dedication to self-determination and community empowerment left an indelible mark on Colorado's landscape.
In 2002, Governor Bill Owens recognized Brian's exceptional leadership abilities and asked him to serve as a cabinet member. Brian took on the role of Director of Economic Development and International Trade, where he championed initiatives to enhance Colorado's economic prosperity and global trade relations. His tenure in the Owens' Administration saw him serve in two additional cabinet positions, further solidifying his reputation as a dynamic and influential leader.
Brian's passion for nature and community found a new avenue in April 2007 when he was selected in a national search to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Denver Botanic Gardens. Under his imaginative leadership, the Gardens experienced unprecedented growth, with significant achievements in fundraising, building projects, and staff development. Brian had a unique ability to inspire people to create the best version of themselves. He always gave credit to his amazing staff for transforming the Denver Botanic Gardens into a world-class institution, admired and celebrated by visitors from around the globe.
Brian's work at the Gardens and his contributions to tourism and community development were recognized in March of 2025 when he was inducted into the Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame.
Brian was a beloved family member, survived by his sister Teresa Bray, brother-in-law Brett Bray, niece Eliann Carr, nephew Brandon Bray, great-nephews Charles Carr and Michael Carr, and Goddaughter Rebecca Joy Novell of Lancaster, England.
