Claire
Mcdonald
February 20, 1928 – April 13, 2024
Claire McDonald passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, in Denver, Colorado surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on February 20, 1928, in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Elmer W. Schreiner and Christine Henseler Schreiner. As a very young child she lived with her parents in Marshfield in a house her father built. Later, her family moved into her grandparents' farmhouse in nearby Bakerville.
After graduating from Marshfield High, she attended and graduated from St. Agnes School of Nursing. She married and moved to Denver and raised a family of six children. Her family meant everything to her, yet she remained an RN until the age of 82. In addition to working at St. Joseph's Hospital, she volunteered many years for the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in Denver.
Claire was active at the Denver Art Museum as a docent in the Native American Art Department and the Spanish Colonial Art Department. She was awarded outstanding docent in 1980.
She was a lifelong gifted artist (painting and drawing), art collector, and book collector. She loved gardening, being at the family mountain cabin, going to the northern lakes of Wisconsin, visiting the ocean, and celebrating her children and their families at several reunions.
Claire was fun and adventurous. As a nurse, she signed up to go on a medical mission trip to Belize and a second trip to St. Lucia. She traveled widely across Europe and China. She spent quite a bit of time in Santa Fe, NM where she was a collector of Native American art and Spanish Colonial art. She cherished her friendships with some of the artists. She loved to give parties and entertain friends and family. Her table settings were always beautiful.
Claire will be greatly missed by her family and friends, leaving behind incredible memories.
Claire is survived by her children Chris Wester, Anne McDonald Culp (Rex), Steve McDonald (Mary), Tom McDonald (Anne Hirsch), Mary McDonald, and Jim McDonald (Maggie). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren Celine, John (Kathleen), Paul (Yarrow) and Adam McDonald, Kate Kulp, Stephen Wester, Annie Wester Jones (Zach) and James Wester, Nicholas, Charlie (Samantha), and Galen McDonald, Jonah Clyman, Jack, and Will McDonald; and eight great grandchildren Tony McDonald, Naia and Cassidy McDonald, Jacob, Declan, and Abby McDonald, and Henry and Evelyn Jones.
She is further survived by several nieces and nephews, brother Paul Schreiner, sister Barbara Hannon, and the father of her children, Phil McDonald. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Christine, brother Jim Schreiner, sister Gerry Domach, and brother Elmer Jr.
