Dorothy M.
Jones
May 24, 1923 – January 3, 2024
Dorothy, a beacon of warmth and love, departed the world stage on January 3, 2024, at the beautiful age of 100 years, 7 months, and 10 days. She peacefully passed away at home, in her own bed, surrounded by the comfort of her happiness and good health – departing on her own terms. Born on May 24, 1923 in Springfield, Illinois, she lived a life rich in compassion, resilience, and an unyielding zest for living.
Dorothy was a true caretaker, opening her heart and home to people from diverse walks of life. Her love knew no boundaries, embracing different cultures and languages, leaving an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to cross her path.
A trailblazer in her time, Dorothy led her own charge with a strong, independent spirit. She navigated life with determination, always figuring things out on her own. Over the years, she held various roles, working as an assistant in a law firm, serving as a dispatcher for the Operating Engineers Union Local 12, and later becoming a proud businesswoman by owning and operating commercial and residential real estate. She was married to Don C. Jones and Joe R. Cardoza. From Illinois, to California, to Colorado, and in her many travels, her vivacious personality and peppy demeanor brightened the lives of those around her, leaving a lasting impact both personally and professionally.
Dorothy's passion for life extended to the silver screen, where she found joy in Hollywood's magic. Up until her final day, she maintained her glamorous charm, putting on makeup, having her nails done, and getting her hair permed. Her commitment to image reflected her unwavering dignity.
In addition to her incredible life journey, Dorothy treasured a tapestry of cherished memories that illuminated the various chapters of her vibrant existence. In her youth, she twirled under the glittering lights of the local dance hall alongside her best friend, Nina, creating memories that echoed with laughter and the joy of uninhibited moments. She always remembered eating delicious food at her parents' diner, the Four Leaf Clover, and her mother's generosity in preparing sandwiches for the poor during the Great Depression. In the later years of her life, she contemplated the profound significance of nurturing meaningful friendships, recognizing the invaluable worth of having beloved girlfriends. The shared stories and adventures, particularly those with her best friend Elsie, became a source of enduring comfort and joy.
One of Dorothy's proudest moments was witnessing her son, Danny, dance in the enchanting city of Paris, a memory etched in the annals of her heart. Las Vegas became a second home as she delighted in watching her daughter, Janice, grace the stage with her performances, creating a legacy of shared artistic passion.
Dorothy's pride and joy were her grandchildren, Justin and Jennifer, with whom she loved nurturing, taking to movies, creating the most memorable Christmases, and staying up late to play cards. She never forgot a single birthday. Dorothy was also overjoyed to welcome her great-grandson, Ishaan, into the family, a role she treasured as it marked her entry into the esteemed realm of great-grandmotherhood. And her compassionate heart extended to her furry companions, having cared for more animals than anyone could ever remember. Dorothy formed unbreakable bonds and loved dearly all her caregivers from around the world – Tring, Song, Swan, Marielena, Peggy, Betsy, June, and Jamy – as well as the incredible constellation of individuals, helpers, and devoted service providers who played integral roles in making her life beautiful.
