Edwin J.
Probeck Iii
July 10, 1947 – April 28, 2024
Edwin "John" Probeck III, died peacefully surrounded by family on April 28, 2024. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 10, 1947 to Barbara Rice and Edwin John Proceck Jr. When he was three years old the family moved to La Grange, Illinois, and later Western Springs, Illinois.
He graduated from Lions Township High School and attended University of Tennessee and Eastern Illinois University. In 1974 John moved to Boulder, Colorado and had several positions in management and sales. In 1988 John married Susan Stailey. Together they developed a Commercial Landscape Company, Western Proscapes, Inc. Early on they identified that the use of color was definitely lacking on commercial properties. Their landscape designs focused a variety of colorful annuals, perennials, flowering trees and shrubs showcasing color, even in the winter months. This became the hallmark of their designs. Their trademark "We put the color in Colorado" said it all.
He loved traveling, playing golf, reading, gardening, and spending time with his Beagles. Every summer he and Susan enjoyed the family cottage on Portage Lake in Onekama Michigan. The perfect place to play golf, swim, sail, and watch sunsets. John learned to sail from his father and, as a teenager, often crewed for him on his "Snipe" on Lake Michigan and Portage Lake. He remembered hearing the exploding score board at Comiskey Park erupt after a homerun was scored while out sailing on lake Michigan with his father.
John also devoted much energy to cheering for the Colorado Buffaloes and the Denver Broncos. For many years he and Susan had season tickets to all home Buff games, enjoying the fall weather, the game and tailgating with friends before and after.
John was not only a son, a husband, and a father, but an uncle and a brother. He was a respected businessman and a kind and faithful friend. He was a kind and generous, loving and caring individual. He will remain in our hearts and memories, an inspiration and example never to be forgotten.
He was proceeded in death by his father Edwin John Probeck Jr. and mother, Barbara Rice Probeck, and nephew, Paul Van Dyke Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife Susan Stailey Probeck, and son Scott Probeck, sister Susan Truitt (Doug), sister Sarah Aschauer, sister Nancy Johnson (Denny), brother Bill Probeck (Kathy) and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024 at 11:00am at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, 1350 N. Washington St., Denver, CO 80203. In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorials be made to the ASPCA , and Tunnels to Towers Foundation in his name.
