Ellen T.
Snyder
August 9, 1923 – February 5, 2026
On February 5th, 2026, at the age of 102, Ellen Tuttle Snyder passed away peacefully with family at her bedside. What a remarkable journey she had over her many years on this earth! Ellen was born in Evanston, Illinois on August 9th, 1923. Upon moving to New Rochelle, New York early in her life, Ellen attended the Thornton Donovan School and New Rochelle High School. After graduation, Ellen matriculated to Pine Manor Junior College earning her Associate degree. On February 25th, 1944, Ellen married Arthur Leigh Snyder, just prior to his enlistment in the Army during WWII. She fondly referred to Art in the last days of her life as, "my dear, loving and faithful husband".
In the summer of 1961, Ellen, Art and their 4 children decided to leave the east coast. The family piled into their station wagon, headed west and moved to Cherry Hills Village, Colorado. It was here in Colorado that the family made their life together. On top of being a full time Mom, Ellen, who had previously volunteered as an auxiliary nurse during WWII, found new ways to serve others in her new community. Ellen volunteered at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital for over a dozen years working with those who had suffered spinal cord or brain injuries. She and Art often hosted families whose loved ones were recovering and rehabbing at Craig in their home for weeks, if not months at a time. Ellen eventually turned to volunteering at the St. Francis Center in downtown Denver. She spent at least one day a week for over 25 years supporting members of the homeless community. She would say that the most important part of the work was to simply be present, to let the person before her know that she cared about them. In this sense, her spiritual life as a lifelong Episcopalian was her daily life. Additionally, Ellen was a member of the Daughters of the King, an active participant in a prayer quilting ministry and somehow found time to teach English to Nepalese refugees. Ellen was also an accomplished tennis player, skier and an avid gardener who loved spending the summer months with her family in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Ellen is survived by her four children, Susan Brickey (Jim Brickey) of Greenwood Village, Colorado, Donald Snyder (Kit Snyder) of Evergreen, Colorado, Patti Snyder of Denver, Colorado, John Snyder (Kam Snyder) of Leawood, Kansas, seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Dawson (Katie Dawson), Sara Snyder-Poole (Jon Poole), Erin Ulric (Ben Ulric), Johanna Bonewitz (Paul Bonewitz), Jonathan Brickey (Lauren Morales), Anna Schauble (Ryan Schauble), Tyler Snyder and eleven great grandchildren, Ryan Dawson, Joseph Poole, Cole Schauble, Elise Poole, Travis Schauble, Isabella Ulric, Emma Ulric, Bode Schauble, Sadie Bonewitz, Lilah Bonewitz and Quinn Bonewitz. Ellen was predeceased by her husband Art in 2014.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 27th, 2026 at 2:00 pm at St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church, 6190 E. Quincy Avenue, Englewood, Colorado 80111.
