Obituary

Gary Yukio Okimoto was born in Brighton, Colorado. He was the second oldest son born to Fred Noboru Okimoto and Mary Ono Okimoto. He passed away unexpectedly on January 31, 2022 in Aurora, Colorado.

Gary grew up in Denver, Colorado and attended North High School. Here, he was very active in their Army ROTC program and was selected to serve as the Brigade Commander of all nine high school programs in the Denver area. Gary graduated with a B.A. from the University of Colorado and the University of Northern Colorado, majoring in speech communications, drama and education.

Gary was a member of the Rocky Mountain Consistory (Scottish Rite Masons) and received their Merit of Honor. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany in the Dental division. Throughout his life, Gary was active in the Denver School of Judo, receiving the rank of fourth-degree black belt. Occasionally, Gary did photo shoots and performance gigs for J.F. Images, Talent Agency. Gary not only found enjoyment in spending time with family and friends, but he also enjoyed visiting Black Hawk, Las Vegas and California.

Gary will be remembered for his stories of life, his kindness, and his love for others. He liked to talk and had a unique perspective on life so he shared his insight and experiences with all he met. All those who knew Gary will miss him greatly.

Gary is survived by his oldest brother, Dick Okimoto, his younger sister, Dr. Ann (Dr. Michael) Nakamura, his youngest sister, Aileen Okimoto; nephews Michael (Hanh) Okimoto, Dr. Christopher Nakamura; nieces, Michelle Okimoto (Dr. Christian Rask-Madsen), Dr. Jaclyn Nakamura, friend and companion, Kyong LeFebre and many great-nephews, great-nieces and cousins.

A private family service will be held for Gary Yukio Okimoto.  Following Gary's wishes, his final resting place will be at Ft Logan National Cemetery.  This is an honor Gary expressed proudly and we are pleased he will be laid to rest on these sacred grounds on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 2:15 pm, Staging Area C.  Family and friends are welcome to say their last farewells at this time.
