Obituary

Geraldine passed away peacefully on May 17, 2022.   Geraldine had written her own obituary:

"I was born July 2, 1923 in the home I was reared, in Wilsonville, Nebraska. It is a very small farming town in South Central Nebraska. My father had been previously married and lose his wife in death at an early age, leaving him with six children. I am the only child of my mother.  My life was very normal for the times and being the baby of seven, I had most of my wishes fulfilled. I attended 12 years of school within walking distance of home. I attended church and Sunday school regularly with my family.

While still in high school, I obtained my social security number so I was able to do a coffee demonstration at the local grocery store. During my growing up years, I had jobs at the drug store, restaurant, bank and grocery store. I then taught in rural schools a few miles out of town for two years. The summer between teaching, I attended classes at Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney, NE. I thought I would work up to a higher certificate of teaching, but after two years, decided teaching was not my thing.

I moved from the parental home at age 19 and went to Scottsbluff, Nebraska where I worked for Schmoller & Mueller piano Co. for nearly ten years. I began as a clerk behind the sheet music and record counters and finished as assistant manager of the store. The main store and offices were in Omaha, Nebraska.

I met my husband in Scottsbluff, while he was there for several months with a crew of boiler makers from Kansas City, MO who were working on the power plant in Scottsbluff. We were married in Scottsbluff and went back to Kansas City. He continued field work for a few months. We were in Iowa City and Dubuque, Iowa during that time then back to Kansas City where we bought a home and lived there for about two years. We then moved to Salt Lake City and have resided here since December 1954.

We have only one child who was born in Kansas City, MO. She came to Salt Lake City with us before she was two years old and grew up here throughout all of her school years. She graduated from Utah State in Logan in 1974. She is now an ordained Christian minister living in Denver, CO. We had another baby girl born in September 1956 who only lived 13 hours. I didn't work out of home until Cheryl was 16 years of age, but after that I held a number of managerial, secretarial, and bookkeeping positions. My husband, Gordon, (0r Dick as he is known to friends) has worked the past 25 years at Ol. J. Industries in Salt Lake City, and is now beginning to think of retirement, and working when he wishes. I found it much easier to leave the business work and have not help any employment for an entire year.  I find no boredom in my life, as I continue to be busy with the activities I enjoy."

It has been many years since this obituary was written. She continued to love her family, her churches (Granger Community Christian Church and Loveland First Christian Church) music and helping people.

In the gospel story of Mary and Martha, she was often the Martha, working in the kitchen and behind the scenes. She took her Christian faith seriously. She wanted to be sure everyone had food, a place at the table and a place to live. She and her husband, Dick, donated many hours to Habitat for Humanity and often donated money to help people get what they needed. Their home was always open to family, friends and strangers. Her subtle passion fueled years of connecting and serving and loving. She loved to sing, play bridge, knit and cook. She loved deeply her parents, siblings and nieces and nephews. In recent years she was increasingly frustrated at what she was unable to do. She leaves behind family and friends who will miss her, but joyfully surrender her to God's love and grace.
