Obituary

Gerre was born February 15, 1935, in Cottle County, Texas. She died peacefully at her longtime home in Littleton, CO, on December 31, 2024, at the age of 89. Medical professionals say she died from heart failure. Those who really knew her would cite the cause as a broken heart from the death, just a few months before, of her beloved husband of 62 years, Dan.

Gerre was a distinct exception to the saying, "You can take a girl out of West Texas, but you can't take the West Texas out of a girl." Other than a very few aspects, most notably her charming accent, Gerre left her West Texas upbringing behind when she moved to Colorado 65 years ago.

Her formal education ended with her graduation from Abernathy, TX, High School in 1953. However, her impressive intellect and a lifelong thirst for knowledge combined to make her a valuable asset for a number of businesses and organizations, as well as someone who could more than hold her own in any conversation.

After working for a few years in the Dallas area, including for the regional YMCA headquarters, Gerre made her one-way move to Colorado in 1959. There, she worked as registrar booking all cabins and lodge rooms at the YMCA Camp in Estes Park during the summers and as an administrator at the YMCA in downtown Denver during the winter months. Eventually, she met Dan, a hike master at the Y Camp, and they married in June, 1962, in Estes Park.

Later, Gerre had a long career as an administrative specialist in various fields, including travel, education, coal geology, and law. There was nothing she could not organize or plan to ensure the success of the project. She loved to volunteer in Littleton, including, in the early 1980s, raising funds and support for the creation of Historic Littleton's Town Hall Arts Center, which has enriched the cultural life of south metro Denver for decades. Additionally, she was involved in local politics, volunteered for a family and community support organization, and was a long-time member of the Friends of the Littleton Library and Museum.

Anyone who knew Gerre and Dan could sense the deep love they had for each other. They shared many activities, most notably reading and keeping up with current events. However, they each had their own interests, with Gerre's including playing bridge, extensive home remodeling, the Colorado Rockies baseball team, and, most avidly, the Denver Broncos football team (including trips to two Super Bowls and to an exhibition game in London in 1987).

As much as Gerre and Dan cared for each other, their love for and pride in their only child, daughter Elisabeth ("Liz"), clearly burned bright. Shortly before her death, when talking was very difficult for her, Gerre told Liz, "You are the best thing Dan and I ever did."

In addition to Liz and her husband Michael Beindorff, Gerre is survived by her brother Wayland (Susan) Gregory of Sherman, TX; two sisters- and brothers-in-law, Sara and Robert McCurdy of Parachute, CO, and Martha and Russ Hamilton of Thornton, CO; sister-in-law Tracy Brickley of Cape Coral, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Dan, Gerre was preceded in death by her parents, A.C. and Minnie Gregory, sisters Rheanell and Mary Lou, and many dear and long-time friends.

Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to Optio Health Services and The Denver Hospice for their wonderful care throughout the final weeks and months of Gerre's life.

At this time, the family is not planning a memorial but will make any updates here. Memorial contributions may be made to The Town Hall Arts Center 2450 Main St, Littleton, CO 80120 or to Integrated Family Community Services 3370 S Irving St, Englewood, CO 80110.
