James Fly
Jones
June 6, 1942 – January 30, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sonja Jones. Born in New Orleans, Jim was the second of three children. He attended Duke University and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Jim served as a physician in the U.S. Army from 1972 – 1976, and was in Landstuhl, Germany. His career as a physician and researcher took him to the University of Arizona Medical Center, National Jewish Hospital and the University of Colorado Medical Center, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In addition to his family, his true loves in life were fishing and art. He became hooked on fishing at an early age and was a member of the Troutmeisters, a tight knit group of fly fishermen. For 30 years and continuing today, they fished rivers all over the West. Jim tied his own flies and made bamboo fly rods. He was also an accomplished artist. He started back in 1965. His pen and ink drawings of German castles and landmarks were sold in Landstuhl, Germany for many years. After retirement, he switched to watercolor and took many art classes and participated in an art salon in Denver.
He is survived by his daughters Dana Brimmer (Philip), Kristin Pichler, and Ann-Britt Jones (Sam); grandchildren Isabel, Pierce, Dalton, Anja, and Freja; brother Douglas Jones (Virginia); nieces and nephews Betsy Foster, Bill Griffin, Abigail Drachman Jones, and Eliza Quincy. He was predeceased by his parents Lamar and Elisabeth Jones, and his sister Elisabeth (Dibby) Griffin (William).
