Jeffrey Maccollam
Brown
February 21, 1955 – January 29, 2019
Jeffrey MacCollam Brown, M.D., age 63, died at home in Denver on January 29, 2019. Dr. Brown was born in Schenectady, New York, to William H. Brown, M.D. and Christine Ayotte Brown, and raised in Niskayuna, N.Y. He graduated from Bates College and Albany Medical College, and earned the Master's of Public Health from Harvard, specializing in maternal and child health, and international health and policy.
Dr. Brown served his medical residency in pediatrics at Colorado School of Medicine in Denver and worked in community health in Colorado Springs before returning to Denver to practice pediatrics for many years at Denver Health, directing pediatrics at the Westside Neighborhood Health Center. Later he directed pediatrics at Vail Valley Medical Center, and most recently he served as a neonatal hospitalist for a network of eight hospitals in Ft Worth, Texas. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and board certified in Medical Management. He taught pediatrics for many years at CU School of Medicine, published numerous peer-reviewed articles and was in demand as a speaker and consultant in his field.
Jeff is remembered as a great listener and a wonderful friend who cared passionately about his pediatric patients and their parents, cultivated relationships with physician peers and hospital board members, and always stopped to converse with custodians and cafeteria workers, often in his fluent Spanish.
Jeff struggled with a number of health issues over nearly 20 years. He survived throat cancer in 2002, but the treatment left him with severe chronic neck pain for the rest of his life. In 2010 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
These health challenges curbed Jeff's very active lifestyle, but never grounded him. An avid golfer and squash player, he turned to cycling when he had to give up those sports, completing Ride the Rockies, a cross-Colorado bicycle tour seven times; the Register's Great Annual Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBAI) several times, and the MS 150 (for Multiple Sclerosis) twice. He loved sailing and snorkeling, especially in Puerto Rico, where he was a frequent visitor with his life-long friends, the Chafey family.
Family ski trips during his youth led to Jeff's lifelong passion for skiing, first in his native New England and then in Colorado. He was especially fond of Vail, with its nearly endless back bowls and reliable powder.
Jeff enjoyed fixing things as well as people. He had his own ski-tuning shop for friends and relatives in his Park Hill garage and was adept at household repairs from plumbing to electrical work.
Jeff loved nothing better than making people laugh. He recently took a class in stand-up comedy, capitalizing on his pleasure in telling jokes. Above all, he is remembered as a wonderful friend, and he leaves behind countless friends all over the world. He listened to people in a way that let them know they mattered and that he cared.
Jeff Brown is survived by his wife Margaret "Meg" McCormick of Denver, and his children: Matt Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., Nick Brown of Bozeman, MT, Lila Stenson of Memphis, TN, Anna Stenson of Denver, and Jack Stenson of Denver. He is also survived by his siblings, Linda Brown (Nick Hole), Kurt Brown, M.D. (Jane Gould, M.D.), and William H. Brown, Jr.; and nephews Andrew Brown, William H. Brown III and Cameron Brown; and niece Maeve Brown.
