An accomplished equestrian, skier, artist, and lover of animals, she worked early in life as an instructor at the Outward-Bound Education Center in Baad-Mittelberg, Austria.
Katharine earned a degree in fine art from the University of Colorado.
Katharine loved her work serving the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Botanical Gardens and Windsor Gardens. She was a strong advocate for animals and adored her family pets. As a fourth-generation Denver native, Katharine's family tradition of service runs deep. Her Great Grandfather George Gifford Symes served as the Justice of the Supreme Court for the Territory of Montana and two terms in the U.S. Congress. Her Grandfather John Foster Symes was United States District Judge for the District of Colorado.
Her Father John McMurtry was president of the Denver Rotary Club and her mother served on the first volunteer Board of the Winter Park Recreation Association and helped to establish the first amputee ski program at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

She is preceded in death by her parents John and Virginia McMurtry and family mentor Robert Nelson.
A private celebration of life will be held in June 2023.
