Leslie Moore succumbed to the biggest battle of her life, fighting Pancreatic Cancer.
Leslie was a born fighter who followed in her father's footsteps into the Denver Public School System. Born to Lester and Martha Moore on September 6, 1947 as a Denver native, she attended public schools and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.
Following her graduation from Western State , she returned to Denver to teach physical education at Kepner Junior High, Gove Junior High and John F. Kennedy High School. She coached and won many awards in gymnastics, girls track and field and basketball in the years of 1971 to 1989. Her transfer to Administration in 1990 led to her final position as Director of Athletic & Student Activities for DPS from 1998 to 2007.
As an avid equal rights advocate and Title IX officer, she was instrumental in pushing Title IX throughout her career from equality in girls sports to assigning women officials to men's basketball tournaments and led the state in introducing three-person officiating crews for basketball. She was recognized by many organizations for her fighting spirit of equality both locally, statewide and nationally. Leslie became the first woman in 75 years to be chosen as the Board of Director President of the Colorado High School Activities Association in 1996. In 2010 she was inducted into the Denver Public School Hall of Fame and the CHSAA Hall of Fame. She was a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association Board of Directors {2004-2007} and inducted into the NIAAA Hall Of Fame in 2016.
Her post retirement years were spent playing golf, painting with watercolors, weekly bridge games, reading, fishing and traveling locally, nationally and to Europe, she will be remembered as one who enjoyed parties and celebrations. Leslie was a deeply spiritual woman. One of her biggest celebrations was becoming a member of the Risen Christ Catholic Parish in 2021,
Leslie is survived by her partner Susan Moore, brother Michael Moore, nephews Troy and Adam Moore, great nephew Brayden Moore, Barbara Johnson and countless friends.
To honor Leslie, donations can be made to NIAAA (National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) or Sportswomen of Colorado in her name.
Funeral Mass will be on Monday June 13, 2022, 10:00 am at Risen Christ Catholic Parish, 3060 S. Monaco Parkway, Denver, Colorado 80222.
