Loren Eugene Golitz MD passed away on March 8, 2019 in Denver. Born at home on April 7, 1941 in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Loren was the eldest of three children; all deceased. His parents, Ross Winston Golitz, a carpenter, and Helen Francis Golitz, a homemaker, were born and raised in Pleasant Hill. An excellent student and enthusiastic athlete, Loren lettered in three sports each year at Pleasant Hill HS. The first in his extended family to attend college, Loren graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri in 1966 as an MD.

On June 18, 1966 Loren married Deborah Frazier, from Sturbridge MA.   Deb was a teacher who later in life earned a Doctoral Degree in Psychology and practiced as a Psychologist at Denver Health Medical Center. Last June they celebrated 52 years of marriage.

Loren did a residency in Internal Medicine at the Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco from 1966-1969. He and Deb then moved to New York City where he completed a residency in Dermatology. In 1973, he accepted a fellowship in Dermatopathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC. Dermatopathology became his passion and area of expertise.

As a Professor of Dermatology and Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and as Chief of Dermatology at Denver Health Medical Center, Loren mentored thousands of medical students and residents. He was especially treasured by the 69 Dermatopathology Fellows who spent a year or more under his kind, intelligent and thoughtful guidance. He loved his fellows and he loved teaching. His excellent training of others is a lasting legacy. Loren retired at age 77 in March 2018 as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Throughout his career, Loren took on many leadership roles in national medical associations. He served as Secretary-Treasurer and President of The American Academy of Dermatopathology; President of the American Society of Pediatric Dermatology; Member of the Board of the American Academy of Dermatology; and Member and Director of the American Board of Dermatology (the national test committee) to name just a few. He lectured worldwide and directed countless nationwide training courses for Dermatologic meetings. All the while he was writing and studying; he published over 80 academic articles and abstracts and contributed to 33 books.

Among his many honors and awards, Loren received the Founders Award from the American Society of Dermatopathology.

As a college student, Loren had learned to fly. His father's tiny Taylorcraft airplane was housed in a barn and he took off from a farmers field. In the Colorado mountains, he climbed fourteeners, skied, hiked and backpacked with Deb and their children. Later in life Loren loved spending time on the deck of their cabin, or anywhere comfortable and congenial, in conversation with friends, trainees and family. He was a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos and the Missouri Tigers.

Survivors include Loren's wife Deb and his treasured children, Carrie Golitz of Cusco, Peru, and Matthew Golitz (stage name Matthew Moon) of Nashville TN, brother in-law Stuart Frazier (wife Diane)of Livermore, CA, niece Lynne Sudduth Sandor (husband Dani) of Parker, their son Oliver (Loren's honorary grandchild), nephew Darren Sudduth (wife Kelly) of Dallas, Texas and their children, niece Rebekah Storman (husband Russell) of Hawaii, and step nephews Robert Golitz and Steven Ferguson and their families and beloved pup Charlie.

A Celebration of Loren's life will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Denver Botanical Gardens (In Mitchell Hall) from 11-2pm.
