A wonderful woman died at the end of January. Nancy C. Windes was devoted to family and friends, a loving wife, and an effective early childhood teacher with endless patience and empathy. She died from a stroke on January 29, 2022 at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, CO.
Life began in Newport News, VA. and Nancy grew up in Richmond. She met her husband Douglas at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC, where they were both students. They married on June 29, 1974. He frequently acknowledged that their union was the best decision he made in his entire life.
Nancy enjoyed a long teaching career. In 1970, she began teaching 8 th grade history in the Chesterfield County, VA schools. She moved to Arlington, VA, where she began as an early childhood teacher in the Head Start Program and then kindergarten in the Fairfax County public schools. After moving to Denver, Nancy was overjoyed to be hired by St. Anne's Episcopal School. She taught 2 nd grade, and later was selected to develop by herself a new traditional kindergarten program and was honored to teach the first class. Nancy remained at St. Anne's for 23 years. After retirement, she was a valued substitute teacher at My School Preschool until 2019.
Douglas was her best friend. She also deeply cherished her family and many friends, and loved connecting with them, sharing the maturation of their children, and enjoying their company. She deeply valued these friendships.
Nancy enjoyed traveling, outdoor activities, and was a long-time volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. Her favorite endeavor was connecting with family and friends via birthday cards, holiday cards, hello cards, miss-you cards, and travel post cards to nieces and nephews, friends' children, and grandchildren.
Nancy is survived by her husband Douglas, brother Clarence William Wellons Jr., sister-in-law Martha Wellons, and six nieces and nephews: Ann Rivera, Conner, Lisa, and Todd Windes, and Kate and Todd Wellons. She is also survived by her aunt Jane C. Edwards of Richmond, VA, who was a life-long mentor and Nancy's beloved cousin Mary Ellen Plybon of Greensboro, NC. There are other family and friends who will miss her very much, as will many former students and colleagues.
Nancy's memorial service will be on Saturday, May 21, 2022, 10:00am at Bethany Lutheran Church 4500 E. Hampton Avenue Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113. A reception to follow at St. Anne's Episcopal School 2701 S York St, Denver, CO 80210.
