Obituary

Read Edward Kerr, 54 of Denver, Colorado passed away in his home on Sunday October 6, 2024.

Read was born in Athens, Tennessee on June 13, 1970 to Larry and Sarah Kerr. As a child he lived in Tennessee, South Africa, Louisiana, and Connecticut and fondly embraced the heritage and traditions he gleaned from each. A 1988 graduate of Wilton High School in Wilton, Connecticut, Read proudly went on to attend Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1994 with a degree in political science and a minor in Italian, he pursued his love of theater, singing, and travel by touring with Up with People, a nonprofit organization committed to transforming communities worldwide to create meaningful impact by engaging young adults in service leadership, dialogue, and performing arts. This allowed him to travel the world, sharing his talents for a great cause while making lifelong friends. Once returning, Read eventually settled in Atlanta, Georgia where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Heather Borders Kerr.

Read was an avid sports enthusiast with an appreciation for both college and professional sports. Born and raised a diehard Tennessee Vols fan and devoted Mets fan, he valued time-honored traditions (like pimento cheese sandwiches while watching the Masters) attending games and tracking the stats of his favorite teams. Not only did Read enjoy following sports he was also a participant. Upon moving to Denver, Read could be found in the Rockies, snowboarding or completing 14ers with his beloved rescue Labs, Dallas and Sue Ellen.

Read was artistic and creative showcasing his talented woodworking skills through home remodeling and building furniture. The work he did on his Craftsman homes first in Dallas and later in Denver was something of which he was deeply proud. He donated his time to help others as well, frequently volunteering with family and friends at Metro Caring, an anti-hunger organization in Denver.

Read cherished his family and their traditions, following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents becoming an enthusiastic and accomplished cook. Over the years he lived in many states, embracing their culture and traditions which showed in the meals he cooked and recipes he loved to share. For example, making red beans and rice--a favorite from his days in Lake Charles--or cooking using his Mammaw's black iron skillet.

Read is survived by the deeply devoted Heather Borders Kerr, his parents, Larry and Sarah Kerr and younger brother Danel Kerr, as well as, niece Kendall Kerr, and nephews Collin Kerr (wife, Lydia Kerr) and Austin Kerr (wife, Keeley Kerr), and two great nephews Kieran and Kayson. He was preceded in death by his nephew Ryan Bishop Kerr and loving grandparents, Lawrence and Freida Kerr and Isaac and Elizabeth King.

In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Metro Caring , 1100 East 18th Street, Denver, CO 80218.

Information regarding a Memorial Service will be forthcoming.
