Obituary

Richard "Dick" Martley was born in Chicago in 1931. Dick graduated from Northwestern Military Academy and went on to the University of Illinois, where he was a member of Omega Delta Chi Fraternity. Dick served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and after leaving the service began his life-long career in life and group insurance. Dick was a CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) which is the equivalent of a master's degree in his field.

Dick was working in Dallas for State Mutual insurance and had the opportunity to go and ski with the Dallas Ski Club in Colorado, which led to his love of skiing. Dick asked for a transfer to Denver and trained to become a volunteer ski patrolman at Arapahoe Basin. He volunteered for 25 years and earned the National Ski Patrol Recognition Award. Dick then proceeded to volunteer as a nature guide at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Outdoor Program for several years. He loved nature and animals and being in the outdoors. Dick traveled and camped in many areas of Colorado and surrounding states, where he enjoyed the outdoors in solitude.

Dick was married for over 60 years to his wife, Kay and was father to Lisa (Donna), Kim (Jeff), Scott, a grandfather to four grandchildren, Emma (Matt), Cole, Liz, and Emily, and a great-grandfather to Jace. As a family, the Martleys took many summer vacations all over the United States, Mexico and Canada. Dick liked to stick to a schedule and requests to stop for breaks were granted with reluctance…he was on a mission to get to the final destination! He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the Central City Opera, the Natural History Museum and for lunch at McDonalds (his favorite restaurant).

Dick had a lifelong fascination of trains, from his childhood in Chicago where he spent many a day in the railyards. As a hobby, Dick had an extensive miniature train set to which he enjoyed adding over time. In his travels, he was able to ride many famous trains in the US and in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Dick died peacefully at home after battling Alzheimer's for several years at the age of 93, still having a quality of life thanks to his wife, Kay, who took such amazing care of him until his passing.

Dick was a loving husband and wonderful father and "papa". He will be deeply missed.

A private service will be held with family in Glenwood Springs, CO where he will be laid to rest.

Donations can be made in his honor to Alzheimer's Association
