Obituary

Scott James McPhail, 70, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 21, 1955, Scott was the beloved son of Russell Guy McPhail and Zona Maxine Wilson.

Scott grew up in Waterloo and graduated from West High School. Drawn by his love of the mountains, he moved to Denver over 40 years ago and built a life surrounded by the natural beauty he cherished. An avid skier and hiker, Scott took great joy in conquering several of Colorado's 14ers and exploring the outdoors whenever he could.

He dedicated 23 years of service as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, known for his reliability, work ethic, and friendly spirit along his route. For more than 30 years, Scott was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion, where he found community and purpose in honoring and supporting veterans—a cause that remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Scott met his wife, Cheryl, at the American Legion, and together they shared a deep and devoted partnership filled with laughter, warmth, and mutual respect. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl McPhail; his sons, Sean Michael McPhail and Spencer David McPhail, both of Denver, Colorado; his brother, David McPhail; his sister, Margie McPhail Musch, and her husband, Mike; as well as many extended family members and friends who will remember his generous heart and steadfast loyalty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Zona, and his sister-in-law, Sunny McPhail.

A memorial service will be held on October 25, 2025, 3:00 pm at American Legion Post 1, 5400 E Yale Avenue, Denver, 80222 . All are welcome. Separate plans are pending for a Celebration of Life in Waterloo, Iowa, in November.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion Post 1 , in honor of Scott's lifelong dedication to veterans and community service.

Scott's love of country, family, and the great outdoors will live on in those who knew him.
