Vivian G.
Dodds
August 24, 1928 – July 1, 2022
Vivian entered this world on an August day in 1928, her sunny warm personality, dimpled and mischievous smile reflected the season of her birth.
She was a brilliant student, winning many academic awards. She completed her nursing degree at Cornell, learning the essentials of caring for patients and at the same time creating lifelong friendships with her classmates. Moving from the East Coast to Denver, she began a career as a public health nurse. It was going along quite nicely until a young teacher came along and stole her heart (or did she steal his?). Although they had met briefly a few years prior, and weren't particularly taken with each other, when they reconnected it was clear that Joe was the man for her.
They married 2 months later at Joe's family cabin in Colorado. Reportedly, after the wedding she was relieved she wouldn't have to ride any more horses to impress Joe. He was clearly sufficiently impressed. They shared a wonderful relationship for over 65 years; camping, traveling the world, snorkeling, and discussing books and politics. After a year and a half of marriage they welcomed Walter into the family, followed by Peggy and Ann. The family continued to travel, camp, and discuss books and politics.
Vivian was very active in the League of Women voters throughout her adult life and a life-long feminist. She canvassed frequently, never missed voting in any election, and impressed on her children the importance of being informed and consistent voters. She ran for school board in the early 1970's on an anti-segregation platform and played a large role in getting the Denver Public Schools desegregated.
She was a fabulous cook, avid gardener, and was constantly trying new crafts and art projects. Always expecting her children to participate, she was a great teacher. When her children were old enough, Vivian decided it was time to re enter the workforce.
As a school nurse with the Aurora Public Schools she complained that her greatest challenge was battling lice, however she did important and challenging work assisting students who were ill, or struggling with addiction or pregnancy. She was awarded Colorado School Nurse of the Year in 1980.
With Joe by her side, Vivian continued to travel world-wide, assembling a beautiful collection of art and memories from around the globe. She hosted countless international guests over the years for a meal, a week or a month, always making sure they were well fed and entertained. Participation in several book clubs and discussion groups kept her well informed and interested in a wide variety of topics.
Vivian is survived by husband Joe, Children: Walter(Dolly), Peggy (Marty) and Ann(John). Grandchildren Joey (Kjersti) and Hannah (Alex) and 3 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers please commit to voting in every election in Vivian's honor.
