Obituary

Bob Mendes husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away recently with his wife Joanne by his side and family nearby.  Bob was a smart, conservative, industrious and adventurous soul.  Born in the West Indies he spent his childhood in Tobago and his high school years in upstate New York where he attended Millbrook School.  He chose a career he described as romantic and adventuresome. He became a Petroleum Engineer at the University of Oklahoma.  His career took him and his family outside the U.S. to Venezuela, Libya and England.  Each location provided its own challenges and opportunities for Bob professionally and for the family in various ways.

Bob was a life-long learner.  He taught himself to read before starting formal education on the island, learned to cast his own toy soldiers and built his first small boat, by hand, on Tobago.   He took great advantage of the decades spent living in London to develop an interest in art, through his wife, and share cultural events with his children.  He continued his mental engagement into his late seventies through the Academy of Life-Long Learning where his favorite topics included US history, Civil War and World War II.  England also provided years of enjoyment off the coast while he handed down his love of sailing to son Mike.  Bob led a full life, balanced with interesting work, pursuits, travel and family responsibilities.  He shared exposure to the world, travels and education to his children and grandchildren for decades.

Bob's grandchildren who lived in Colorado were the impetus to leave London and move back to the US.  Bob's second career involved consulting in the oil industry and the role and duties of grandfather which he much enjoyed.  He supported the grandchildren in their individual interests and provided opportunities for education and exposure to the world through travel.

Bob is survived his wife Joanne of 62 years, children Lynne Mendes Stein and Michael Mendes, both of Colorado, and their families, including his 5 grandchildren.  Bob's sisters Diana Mendes and Julia Mendes currently live in Georgia, US and Ottawa, Canada.

Bob will be remembered by Joanne, Lynne, Mike, Jacqui, Marc, Robert, Michael and Carolyn along with sisters; Diana and Julia, friends and colleagues based on the memories each feel most important given the impact he left on their hearts, minds and even hobbies, during his long-term involvement in their lives.
