Obituary

Warren Morrow's life is a story of curiosity and creativity, the fruits of which he shared generously with his family, friends, and students. Warren was the eldest of two sons born to George and Mabel Morrow in Ogallala, Nebraska. Warren participated actively in the humanities during his schooling and graduated as valedictorian of his senior class. From an early age he longed to know what lay beyond the Great Plains.

His first foray was to Colorado where he enrolled at Denver University, majoring in fine art. After graduating in 1962, he moved briefly to San Francisco, returning to DU where he earned his Master of Fine Arts and soon joined the faculty of the art department at the university where he taught for the next six years. In 1971 he began a 26-year tenure at Pickens Technical Center where he taught graphic design to high-schoolers in Aurora Public Schools.

At DU Warren met Meg Miller, a fellow Nebraskan. Warren married Meg, his best friend, in 1964 and began a 47-year adventure. Being teachers, their long summer vacations afforded them time to indulge a mutual wanderlust. Their first big trip was to Europe in 1966, with an ambitious itinerary of ten countries. The birth of their only child, Michael, in 1971 did little to slow them down, and over the years they traveled far and wide, traversing the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central America, finally visiting nearly 50 countries together. Meg was diagnosed with melanoma in 2007. Their first grandchild, Miller, born in 2008, was named in her honor. Warren cared lovingly for Meg until she passed in 2011.

In 2015, Warren met Ray Miller. They shared many interests, including opera, ballet, music, and theatre. Warren made the supreme sacrifice by going with Ray to sporting events, even watching some on television. They became friends, then partners. They never married but were faithful to the marriage vows: "I choose you to have and to hold, for better or worse, in sickness and health, to love and to cherish as long as we shall live." Together they visited Peru, cruised the Norwegian coast and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and made multiple trips to Mexico. Their visit to West Virginia and cruise in Alaska completed Warren's goal to visit all 50 states. Much time was spent at Warren's small cabin near Central City. Warren moved with Ray to Lone Tree, Colorado in 2023. To say they were inseparable is an understatement.

Warren's creative impulses extended beyond the canvas. Everything was fair game for design, from travel itineraries, to dinner party menus, to the Christmas cards so many of you received promptly each February or March. With Meg he transformed their small 1960's tract house and their tiny mountain cabin into art-filled spaces well suited to entertaining friends. His beloved garden evolved season after season and was ever a peaceful refuge. His prodigious curiosity fueled a life-long love of learning, from drama and music at an early age to his constant reading and dogged life-long pursuit of the French language. Warren taught himself (pre-YouTube) whatever skills would advance his creative desires. As a teacher he was a mentor to many. Warren's paintings are in the collection of the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art.

By his own estimation, Warren lived a life with few regrets and many blessings. He passed peacefully after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his partner Ray, his son Michael, daughter-in-law Taryn, granddaughters Miller and Josephine, brother Clarke, sister-in-law Pam, and nephews Christopher and Jason. We invite loved ones to celebrate Warren's life on Saturday, March 9, at 11am at Christ Church United Methodist, 690 Colorado Boulevard, Denver.
