Webb F.
Harwell
December 15, 1945 – February 1, 2023
Webb Follin Harwell, cherished husband, father, stepfather, brother, and friend, passed away on February 1, 2023, in Wheat Ridge, CO. He was 77.
The son of Aubrey Biggs Harwell and Grace Cleveland Follin Harwell, Webb came into the world on December 15, 1945, thirteen minutes before his beloved twin brother, Bob. Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Webb attended high school at Montgomery Bell Academy before graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1968. Following graduation, he accepted a job with Hughes Aircraft Company and drove across the country to California, stopping to take photographs along the way. Trained as an electrical engineer, he spent his forty-year career working in both engineering and management positions for companies including Ford Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, Aerojet Corporation, and finally as a senior executive for the Pratt & Whitney Division of United Technologies.
Webb was handy and skilled, an excellent driver, good at putting up shelves and fixing things. A vegetarian for over forty years, Webb loved animals and nature and shared his joy in California's woods, vineyards, and beaches with his family. In his wife, Judy, he found a partner in adventure. Webb and Judy met at Ford Aerospace and had their first date at a Placido Domingo benefit concert. (Judy invited him.) They were married in Florence, Italy in 2000 and enjoyed hiking, kayaking, and traveling together and with friends.
Webb loved skiing, cycling, and running, and discovered late in life that he was also quite good at golfing. He shared many wonderful ski trips with his brother, Bob, and genially tolerated Judy's somewhat less proficient skiing abilities. His brain cancer battle lasted an unbelievable 12+ years, and his family feels blessed that they had the opportunity to enjoy new experiences with him for so much of that time.
Even after a glioblastoma diagnosis slowed him down, Webb was still known by all to be a witty, good-natured man with a shockingly strong handshake. In his later years he enjoyed sitting in the sun with his treasured labs and surrounded by family and friends, especially his two grandchildren, at his homes in Denver, CO, and Corona Del Mar, CA.
Webb's warmth and sense of humor are remembered by his wife, Judy Harwell; daughter and son-in-law, Haylie Swenson and Ross Dewey; stepdaughter, Katie Farrell; stepson and stepson-in-law, Peter Steinauer and Kevin Sawyers; grandchildren, Kellan and Emily; and brothers, Robert "Bob" Harwell and Aubrey Harwell, Jr.
